鈥淭here is a place at SUNY for every New Yorker, and each year we come together to herald and celebrate the achievements of a diverse group of some of SUNY鈥檚 most accomplished students,鈥 said SUNY Chancellor King. 鈥淭his year鈥檚 winners include first-generation students, researchers, a single mother and grandmother, a cancer survivor, international students hailing from over 16 nations, athletes, and a student who worked with NASA鈥檚 Goddard Space Flight Center鈥攁mong so many more with inspiring stories of excellence in the classroom and beyond. It is my honor to celebrate the achievements of the nearly 200 CASE awardees as they inspire others and illustrate what is possible with a SUNY education.鈥
Ortlieb, a Recreation Leadership major from Cortland, is president of the Student Government Association. She is a resident assistant, lifeguard, and a student club officer and has used her recreational leadership major to plan events for her peers focusing on their leadership development. Ortlieb also has brought back civic engagement opportunities to student government members, including planning a campus-wide blood drive. She maintains a 3.9 GPA and earned NJCAA all-academic honors as a member of the College鈥檚 softball and soccer teams in the 2022-2023 academic year.
Louis Scholl, a Business Administration major from Ithaca, earned a 3.85 GPA while balancing countless student leadership roles. He served as the student trustee on the College鈥檚 Board of Trustees during the 2022-23 academic year, was a member of the Student Government Association and Faculty Student Association, and worked as a student leadership assistant, resident assistant, and peer mentor. He was selected as the Student Leader of the Year award winner for 2022-23 and was an active volunteer at new student orientation and commencement, including serving as the student speaker for multiple events.
The Chancellor鈥檚 Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and have been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement. It is the highest honor SUNY bestows upon students.
